History of Calculus Lodge

This history was generated for the Lodge coming of age Festival (21st Anniversary) 4th Feb 1933, held at Pagani’s Restaurant, Great Portland Street, London W1

In the year 1911, Members of the Council of the London Association of Accountants who were Freemasons, met at the offices of the Association, and agreed upon the desirability of forming a Lodge which, while not seeking to restrict admission to Members of that Body, would appeal particularly to Certified Accountants who desired to join the Craft.

With a view to strengthening the Petition to Grand Lodge, a few Brethren of other professions, notably W. Bro. W. Corbett Goulding, who was then Prov. G. Treasurer of Essex, were invited to associate themselves as Founders. W. Bro. W. Corbett Goulding gave the scheme his heartiest support, and the Petition for the new Lodge to be called “Calculus,” having been recommended by the Brethren of the Pickwick Lodge, No. 2467, was duly presented, and the Warrant of the M.W. Grand Master granted.

In forwarding the Petition on behalf of the Founders, W. Bro. W. Corbett Goulding, the Master Designate, explained that all the signatories to the Petition were Brethren “engaged in professional or commercial pursuits, who find the necessity in the course of their daily avocations of making constant use of the fourth of the Liberal Arts and Sciences, hence the name of the proposed Lodge ‘Calculus’, which signifies ‘a branch of mathematics leading to calculation’, and has been adopted in this instance as a near synonym for ‘Arithmetic’, which is the basis of all commercial enterprise.”

The Lodge was consecrated at Pagani’s Restaurant, Great Portland Street, W., on the 17th of February, 1912, by the late Grand Secretary. V. W. Bro. Sir Edward Letchworth, F.S.A.. assisted by: —
